    The VLP is delighted to announce the appointment of two new members to our Board of Directors. Joining the VLP’s Board are Brian Fryd, a Principal at Cornerstone Research and Jennifer Tan, MBA, MPH.

  4. Joint Public Hearing: The Unified Court System and COVID-19, VLP Testimony

    On Friday, August 21, 2020 The New York State Senate Committees on the Judiciary, Codes, and Housing, Construction, and Community Development held a joint public virtual hearing to examine the re-opening and operation of New York’s courts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sidney Cherubin, VLP Director of Legal Services, testified on behalf of unrepresented consumer debt litigants, calling on the courts to commit to (1) improve messaging and communications to litigants and legal advocates, (2) develop policies, procedures, and access to technology for unrepresented litigants and (3) ensure access to justice remains a priority.   5. Press Release: VLP Launches New Probate Initiative

    BREAKING NEWS:  In response to the coronavirus pandemic and the unfortunate rise in COVID-19 related estate cases, the VLP announces the launch of the VLP Probate Initiative in partnership with the Brooklyn Bar Association Trusts & Estates Section and Surrogate’s Court Committee.

    This new initiative offers pro bono services in probate matters to qualifying New York City residents facing the untimely death of a family member as a result of COVID-19. Volunteer legal services will be provided to families with estates of $50,000 or less, including completion of applications for voluntary letters of administration and SCPA 1310 affidavits regarding certain debts without administration. 


  6. Press Release: VLP and Akin Gump Launch COVID-19 Frontline Workers Initiative

    BREAKING NEWS: In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP), in partnership with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP (Akin Gump), has launched the VLP COVID-19 Frontline Workers Initiative. The timely initiative focuses on recognizing the sacrifice and dedication of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East members by offering the free preparation of life planning documents – wills, health care proxies, powers of attorney, parental designation forms, and other life planning documents.
