The VLP is excited to participate in an upcoming webinar hosted by the NYC Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (“OATH”) in partnership with Mobilization for Justice and New York Legal Assistance Group to discuss pro bono opportunities assisting NYC residents who receive summonses from the NYC Department of Building or the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission.
Training and pro bono assignments will be arranged for those wanting to engage in representation at OATH hearings. This program will build advocacy and litigation skills for those involved.

The VLP is thrilled to participate in another event hosted by the Metropolitan Black Bar Association (“MBBA”) and in partnership with The Legal Aid Society, We Network LLC, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Pi Iota Omega Chapter to provide virtual legal consultations for tenants and homeowners facing eviction and foreclosure in New York City. Volunteer lawyers will be present to assist tenants and homeowners file hardship declarations, emergency rental applications, and referrals to the Office of Civil Justice under the Right to Counsel law.
Tenants and homeowners seeking assistance may register before or during the clinic up until 4:00 PM. Attorneys must register by Wednesday, October 20th to attend and receive CLE credit.

This webinar offers training on consumer debt defense amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. We will give an overview of the work that our staff attorneys and volunteers typically do in our CLARO program. We will also discuss the COVID-19 related consumer protections afforded under Federal and State law, including those affecting credit scores, student loans and renters. Since the pandemic struck, our New York courts that hear consumer cases have been upended — we will review the current state of the courts, the progress that has been made and what lies ahead in these uncertain times. Finally, we will talk about how we have continued to serve our CLARO clients remotely and our plans to continue and expand this service through the CLARO Remote Pilot Project.
